HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER PROGRAM

1.Tenant-based Assistance

Priority is given to families that are residents (living or working in Sacramento County), have a disabled family member, have a U.S. veteran in the household, and who are paying more than 50% of their income to rent. Once families are determined eligible, they receive a voucher. The voucher shows prospective landlords that the family is eligible for a subsidy. Families take this voucher and look in the community for a rental unit that they would like to rent. If the landlord accepts the voucher, and the rental unit meets certain criteria (ie, it has to pass inspection and the rent amount has to be acceptable), the family pays a portion of their income to the landlord each month to cover their portion of the rent. The Housing Authority pays the difference between what the family can afford and what the owner is asking for. As long as the family continues to be eligible, they can take voucher and move to another rental unit and maintain the rental assistance. 2.Project-based Assistance

Families pay a portion of their income to the landlord each month to cover their portion of the rent. The Housing Authority pays the difference between what the family can afford and what the owner is asking for. The family receives the assistance only if they agree to live at this site. Moves are handled differently for the different sites so please read the descriptions carefully. There are different types of housing serving different populations at the different sites.

Please read the information carefully to see if you might qualify before you complete the application.
